Your hip isn't "bad"
Move it or lose it!
I see a lot of things. Some absolutely sad. Some pretty comical.
And some that genuinely baffle me.
When it comes to the body, there’s no doubt that some people are given a short shrift.
And as they move through life, moving well—or at all—becomes a monumental challenge. I want to acknowledge that right here, right now.
But most of you…
Most of you are not in that camp.
Most of you are blaming your age for your wobbles, your aches and pains, and your “bad hip.”
And I’m saying that sentence on purpose…because I want it to set you up.
I want to break through the mass indoctrination we’ve all absorbed:
Growing older = pain and loss of function.
So right now, I want you to suspend your disbelief that anything could be different than the “bad hip” you have at the moment.
Or…
The sore foot.
The saucy shoulder.
The cranky back.
They’re like two-year-olds… always wanting their feed of attention and acknowledgement.
So go ahead, right now:
Place your tender, loving hand on that plaaace and say…
“There, there. I’m here. And I want to hear what you need.”
Then listen.
Really listen.
Make it safe for your body to tell you what it needs.
I can already see some of you rolling your eyes like:
“What do you mean my body talking to me? It already is. It hurts.”
Yes. It hurts.
But my friends… under every ache and pain is something your body is asking for.
And most of us don’t know how to ask the right question, and then how to respond.
In my experience, in my own body and in working with others, when the smoke alarm of pain goes off… there’s usually some small part of ourselves that needs attention.
And if we don’t listen?
Here’s what can happen:
It hurts more
We start moving around the pain (hello compensations)
We start looking for plausible explanations
We believe what other people tell us about our bodies instead of what we’re actually experiencing
We become afraid of moving
We stop moving… because we equate movement with pain
And then the spiral begins:
We become hypervigilant about provoking pain.
We avoid it.
We do less and less.
We lose capacity.
We lose mobility.
We lose strength.
I know you’re smart enough to see what I’m driving at here.
Much of what we credit to “that bad hip” might have been effectively dealt with… if we’d taken the time to ask what it really wanted, rather than becoming a slave to the siren of pain.
The truth is: You can still move with pain.
Of course, some people have acute injuries and need rest.
Some people have conditions that genuinely preclude movement.
But for the rest of us?
Sometimes a daily movement practice that reminds us we can still move with pain and still get strong is exactly what builds resilience and capacity…
…two things we’re told we need to trade in at a certain age.
And we don’t need to.
If you’ve got that “bad hip” I’ve got something to share with you.
